In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

  1. 1.     Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam encouraged fasting on the day of Ashura.

And fasting on the Day of Ashura, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will expiate (the sins of) the year before it.1

Hazrat Ibn Abbas was asked about observing of fast on the day of Ashura, whereupon he said:
I do not know Allah’s Messenger singling out any day’s fast and considering it more excellent than another, except this day (the day of Ashura) and this month, (meaning the month of Ramadan.)2

When fasting on the day of Ashura, it is also advisable to fast one day before or one day after the day of Ashura to avoid imitating the Jews.3

  1. 2.    Shariah encourages exchanging of gifts.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said,
Give gifts and you will love one another. 4

Give gifts, for indeed the gift removes bad feelings from the chest. And let the neighbour not look down upon (the gift of) her neighbour, even if it be the lower shanks of sheep. 5

The exchanging of gifts is not specific and confined to the 10th of Muharram. However, we are encouraged to be more generous on our family and dependents on the 10th of Muharram.
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said,

Whoever generously spends on his dependents on the day of Aashura, Allah Ta’ala will expand his sustenance (Baraqah) for the rest of that year. 6
